The Cert IV in Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care is a course designed for those looking to develop their understanding and skills in people-helping. This is an entry level qualification for people involved in an intentional way in chaplaincy and pastoral care. This qualification prepares chaplaincy and pastoral care workers to:
– Provide pastoral care, advice and support
– Identify and assess client well-being and needs
– Provide basic direction and pastoral counselling with referral to appropriate professionals where appropriate
– Provide pastoral care information.
This qualification aims to develop foundational skills that can underpin growth and development as a chaplain or pastoral care worker. Note that this is a not a counselling qualification, and will not be sufficient for those seeking to go into professional practice. It is, however, an excellent entry point for those looking to develop the basic foundational people-helping skills.

Learners undertaking this qualification will be required to have a mentor who is more experienced and preferably qualified in the area of chaplaincy or pastoral care, as well as meet the practical hours element of this qualification.
This qualification is offered via online and is delivered in trimesters. Recognition of prior learning is also available in part or full depending on prior training and experience. This can be applied for at any point of the year.
The Cert IV in Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care has 9 core units and 4 elective units. Malyon Vocational Training course cost for this qualification is $3250 or $250 per unit.
The Cert IV in Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care is an excellent qualification for those seeking to minister through chaplaincy in a variety of contexts – hospitals, aged care, schools, detention centres. The qualification contains the two mandatory units required by the government for all school chaplains. These units are:
CHCCCS016 Respond to client needs ($250*)
CHCMHS001 Work with people with mental health issues ($250*)

While these units are part of the Cert IV in Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care they may also be incorporated into the Cert IV, Diploma, or studied as stand-alone units. These units are offered by distance and can be commenced at any time. RPL is also available.
